Final Friday Five / Six,twelve hour,100k race.

Thankyou for everyone who supported the Friday Five. Once again, although the field was small, there were some good performances. Well done to Jose,winning his 3rd race in succession , to Fran racing for the first time, and Emma setting a new pb on the course. The final race of the series is this Friday.

Sunday run location this week was Boston,starting at The Hive. Jose, Dennis, Geoff J and Fran were up for it. The route consisted of heading up to Langrick Bridge and then onto the cycle path to Boston. Jose and Dennis broke off at Anton Gowt to do a couple of miles extra, while Geoff and Fran headed to the bridge and back to the Hive on the other side of the bank, to run approx 10 miles. Jose and Dennis totaled around 12 miles.

It was a longer Tuesday session than normal, with Dennis, Geoff J, Emma, Ken and Di again running the route we did on Sunday.

Training continues on Tuesday at 7pm through the winter at The B Hive, consisting usually of a steady run of around 6 miles. All ages and abilities welcome.

Thursdays we meet at Focus( soon to be B and Q!) carpark at 7pm, again for a run of around 6/7 miles.

This Sunday is our Six/ Twelve hour/ 100k race at Witham Park, Boston. Start time is 7.30 am and help/ support is always appreciated. Let's hope its a nice day!!

The Northern League and The Friday Fives.

Although this blog is directed at our road runners a mention must be made about the clubs performance in the final Northern League Track and Field League on Sunday at Cudworth. Once again, although our squad is not huge compared to other teams in our division, such as Doncaster, Sheffield and Chesterfield, all our athletes gave their all. Great performances on the Track was matched by superb encouragement from the stands. We finished 2nd on the day and 3rd overall, and so secure our place in the division for next year. Congratulations to all the athletes, officials, coaches, supporters and family members present. You did us all proud!!

Friday sees the next Friday Five. The start of the race is at 7pm and entry is only £5. Will anybody challenge our 'King of the Fives', Jose Ferreira, who set the course record on the last Five? Support is always welcome even if you don't want to run. Hope to see you all there!!

The two remaining races in The Friday Five series are on 19th and 26th August. The races commence at 7pm from The Hive. These races are a great way of gauging your current fitness levels and only £5 to enter. It is our hope to make this series a regular fixture in our yearly calendar, so support your club and let's get a good turnout in the remaining races!

The Road Running League is now past the half way point. A complete list of races which qualify are listed in the January blog post. To qualify for contention runners are required to complete 6 races from the list. Races remaining are:

Finally the Road Runners are going international in January to compete in The Marrathon International Marrakech in Morocco. At present there are options for a Short or Long Break, taking part in the Marathon/ Half Marathon on 29th January 2012. We need to get cracking finalizing details so, if interested, please have a word with either Dennis or David Johnson. The trip is available to runners and spectators, whether members or not. The more the merrier!!

Friday Five Road Race Series

Our road race series will commence on Friday 8th July. Additional dates are: July 22nd, August 5th, August 19th, August 26th.

The races are over a fast 5.4 mile course from The B Hive. The entry fees are £5 per race or £20 for the entire 5 race series. The race will start at 7pm, with entries on the day from 6pm. Entry forms can be downloaded from the main club website. Minimum age for runners is 15 years old. The races are open to all standards of runners, from all clubs or unattached.

Support would be greatly appreciated from our club runners, either by competing or helping 'behind the scenes'.If anyone is available to help in any way please have a word with me at training( Dennis), or give me a call on 07411137195. This is a great opportunity to race at little cost and gauge your present level of fitness.

It is hoped that the series will part of the local road running scene for years to come to add to our already established events- The Poppy Run, The Friskney Half Marathon and The 6 and 12hr races. Look forward to seeing you all!

Firstly an apology for the recent lack of posts. Current standings in The 2011 Road Runners League and recent performances will all be posted on here in the next few days.

Training continues as normal on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Tuesday location is The B hive, Boston at 7 pm and Thursdays we meet at the Currys carpark,just as you enter Skegness,again at 7pm. The Belvoir Challenge 2010

Saturday March 5th saw the annual running of The Belvoir Challenge.This event compromises a 16 mile race and a separate race over the marathon distance.The weather was ideal for winter running-overcast and cool at the start,but the rainfall over the previous few weeks would mean that the going would be tough over the predominantly off road course.

The Gold Tops had one runner brave the full distance.Tim Swan Smith,in the middle of an intensive racing block-he competed in The Sleaford Half Marathon two weeks ago,has The Norwich Half next weekend and The Grantham Half the week after,turned in a great performance to secure 30th place in a time of 4hrs 4mins.Good Running Tim!!

Two runners settled for the easier(!) option of the 16 mile event.Dennis Rainbow finished 3rd in a time of 1hr 54 mins,while David Johnson,continuing his good preparation for the upcoming London Marathon,finished in a time of 2hr 25 mins,wiping 35 minutes off of his previous best for the Belvoir Short Course.

This really is a good race.Over 1100 runners and walkers participated in the two races and the food at the end is to be savoured.Unlimited tea and coffee,soup and rolls,followed by a pudding of choice(lovely apple crumble and custard!!) are all included as part of the entry fee.A nice touch and definately an event to recommend.

Saturday 19th Feb saw the running of The National Cross Country Championships,held this year at Alton Towers.Although we only had 4 athletes competing it was certainly a day that no-one will forget.Arriving at the venue slightly before 9 a.m we were greeted by snow and rain.The rain continued throughout the day,ensuring what Athletics Weekly magazine called, 'One of the muddiest Nationals ever!'Emma Peniston maintained her inspiring record of competing in everyone of the cross country races this year on the clubs calendar,competing in the Ladies under 17 race.Aidan McClure,another near ever present competed in the Mens Under 17 race,Chelsea Brockett in the Ladies under 20 race and Dennis Rainbow competed in the Senior Mens event.All had strong runs in extremely testing conditions.Well done!The biggest thanks should go towards our runners support crew.Paul Peniston and ,of course,Mr A faced an extremely long day.The first race started at 11 o'clock,whilst the Senior Mens race did not start until 3.15pm.Heart felt thanks are extended towards both in the freezing conditions,and I must admit feeling guilty as at one point on the way home,everyone in the car was sleeping except Paul ,who was driving!Thankyou Paul and Mr A!

On Sunday 20th was The Sleaford Half Marathon.We had seven runners competing:

Sunday 3rd April once again sees the running of The Friskney Half Marathon.This event,as most of you will know is organized by ourselves.It is a great event,set around the country lanes of Friskney.The course is flat and ,over the years ,has consistently produced fast times.If you are chasing that personal best time,this event is the one.Please support the club and think about running this great event.

Start of New Year Training 2011

Firstly may I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Training resumes as normal for the Road Runners tomorrow night,Tuesday 4th January,meeting at 7p.m.Everyone is most welcome.For any newcomers/interested parties reading this,the Tuesday night training normally starts with a group warm up along with our younger athletes.The Road runners then venture outside for a run ,normally between 30 mins and 45 mins duration.Depending on numbers this run can be split between new runners and people who may want to run slower or shorter,and the others.No one is ever left behind..so if you are just taking to running as a new years resolution..don't worry!The location is The B Hive on Punchbowl Lane,Boston.A map can be seen on the main Boston AC website.

On Thursday night a group also meets at Skegness,at the Currys carpark at 7p.m.Again anyone is free to join us.We normally go for between 45 mins and one hour at an easy pace.If anyone has any queries please feel free to contact me at den-rainbow@hotmail.co.uk or give me a call...my number is on the main website under the Road Runners section.

London Marathon Places 2011

The club always recieves several places for the London Marathon.Recently we have been awarded as many as 4 club places,however,this year have only been awarded one.The places are allocated to athletes after discussion by the club committee and take into account such things as turn out at training and races and the general amount of work put in/help given to the club.

This years place has been awarded to Tony Tomblin.Well done!

To my knowledge that brings the total number of Boston A.C athletes who will be competing to 4- David Johnson,Bob Shaw,Dennis Rainbow and Tony Tomblin.All athletes will be delighted to recieve sponsorship for their run,the money which goes directly to the club.If anyone wants to help please contact the individuals or Dennis at training or races.

Boston 'Poppy Run'.

Well-what a day!After some terrible weather this last week,we were truely blessed with great weather this morning.The morning was cold,but the day clear and bright,with virtually no wind.
The club had a good turnout of road runners and it was our own Jose Ferreira who was first to cross the line.As you all know Jose puts a tremendous amount of time into helping the club,is an ever present in races throughout the year-on the road,country and on the Track(his 800m sprint start will go down in club history!),and since coming under the wing of our head coach,Peter Arnott,just continues to improve with every race.Well done Jose!
Boston runner,Shaun North,whose strong running is always appreciated by the club came a good second,followed our young thoroughbred,Aidan McClure in 4th.These 3 athletes dominated the team race.Well done lads!

The Ladies section is going from strenght to strenght at the minute.Alice Flint was second junior/senior lady,with another performance which typifies her never say die attitude.Emma Penistone was 3rd junior/senior lady.Emma always gives her all,both in training and racing,and her attitude is an example to all the younger athletes in the club.This was the second hard race in as many days for Emma,as she ,together with Aidan McClure and Dennis Rainbow,paraded the club colours at the North Midland League Cross Country at Wickstead Park,Kettering,the day before and it was fitting to see her walk off with an individual trophy.Diane Gill was the 3rd member of the winning ladies team,as well as carrying off a trophy in the Ladies vet 40 category.Di joined us in the summer and is already a valued member of our 'road running gang'(not just saying that to get free eggs,Di!!).

Of course it is not just the athletes at the front of the pack who make the club,but everybody as a whole.Well done,and thankyou,to all the rest of our athletes who competed in the 5.4 mile road race and The Fun run.Also for all the invaluable help by everyone involved in the initial organisation of this event and for everyone involved on the day responsible for such things as refreshments,time keeping,marshalling,results and the setting up/taking down of the course.Thankyou.

Tuesday nights and Thursday nights at Skegness involve runs of between 30mins and one hour.
Thursday nights at The B-Hive is a conditioning training night,consisting of flexibility work,strenght work and cardio work indoors,but does not involve any road running.

Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon 12th September

Congratulations to member,Diane Gill,who competed admirably in The Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon in Wales on 12th September.While some of our members were competing on the absolute flat of Mablethorpe Promenade on the same day,Diane was tackling much more undulating terrain, to finish in a time of 1hr 57mins 50 secs,placing 650th out of more than 1200 competitors.

THE East COAST Classic 10k

A bright sunny day and a beautifully calm high tide met the runners at the start of the East Coast Classic 10k at Mablethorpe.Two Boston athletes were competing.In the fierce inter club(but very friendly!) rivalry between the young gun,Aidan McClure and the old dog,Dennis Rainbow,it was Aidan who this time won the battle!Aidan finished in a great 7th position,finishing well ahead of his nearest rivals his age,in a time of 38 mins 40 secs.Dennis was 8th,trying vainly to catch Aidan in the final couple of kms-but failing-in a time of 38 mins 53 seconds.

Next week sees a break from competition before the West Pinchbeck 10 k the week after.Ideas have been suggested for a group run somewhere nice-like Bourne Woods.Anyone up for it?

Sunday saw the running of the Boston and District A.C 6 and 12 hour races at Witham Park ,Boston.A full race report with photographs will be posted within the next few days.Once again the event was a tremendous success,with Boston athletes scooping some of the top awards.Special thanks go to everyone involved in the organisation of the event,and all those who kindly volunteered their time on the Bank Holiday Sunday to help with duties such as lap counting,marshalling and helping with the drinks stations.Thankyou!!

The next few months sees a wealth of racing opportunities for the Road Runners.As well as road races,the cross country season will very shortly be under way.A list of races for you all to consider over the next couple of months:

Welbourne Castle Trail 10k-Race report

Today saw the second running of the Welbourne Castle 10k.After competing in the first event last year,there were 4 'Gold tops'who made the journey to the small village,just outside of Sleaford ,this year.The course had been changed this year,incorporating more fields and trails,and the large amount of rainfall experienced the day before the race,had made the condition of the course-especially in the final 3k-extremely challenging.

First Boston athlete home was Dennis Rainbow in 10th position,in a time of 41mins 36 seconds,followed by Aidan McClure,comfortably finishing as first Under 20 year old in 15th position in 42mins 29 seconds.Tony Tomblin made his customary late appearance just before the start to finish in 77th position in a time of 52 mins 39 seconds.With work committments meaning Tony is currently working 7 days a week and ,once again,had put in several hours of work the actual morning of the race,his dedication continues to inspire the rest of our road runners.

Diane Gill (Di-Hard-as she is now known at the club!)was making her competitive debut for the club,having recently moved into the area.Di finished in 108th position,well up among the female finishers,in a time of 56 minutes 21 seconds.

Sunday saw a depleted line up for the Sunday run.Jose,Tony Tomblin and David Johnson were all away on holidays,which left Geoff Johnson and Dennis Rainbow,both at the B-Hive to carry out maintenance jobs,to fit in a quick run.The route is shown above-a nice run,just short of 10 miles.

Sunday sees the Welbourn Castle 10k,organised by Toonie Express,nr Sleaford.The course is a mixture of farm tracks,footpaths and small roads.Information can be found on www.ToonieExpress.co.uk.Entry on the day is £10 and includes a free drink of your choice from the village pub-The Joiners Arms.Race H.Q is Welbourne village hall LN50NJ.Start time is 11a.m.

RNLI Summer Sprint 10k-Skegness Beach-Saturday 7th August

Saturday 7th August saw the first running of The RNLI Summer Sprint 10k on Skegness Beach.As we use this particular stretch on training runs regularly,several members were keen to give it a go.The course started on the beach just down from the lifeboat station and headed towards the pier and on towards North Shore Golf Course.The race consisted of 2 laps of a 5km course-the first part around and just beyond the pier on soft sand,before runners dropped towards the harder sand at the waters edge.A strong wind was blowing towards the north,presenting the runners with a challenging return leg on each of the two laps.

Boston and District A.C had four runners present.Jose Ferreira lead from gun to tape,never threatened by the competition to record his first victory of the year,in a time just under 40 minutes-an excellent time,considering the difficult conditions.Dennis Rainbow was next member in ,in 3rd place,followed by Aidan McClure in 7th.Geoff Johnson made a welcome return to competition-his 10th position reflecting his rapid return to race fitness.All in all,an excellent team performance by the 'Gold Tops'.
